Outside of the Lamakan Desert it's only a short walk west to reach Kalay. So just keep that direction, you can't really miss it. Pass a bridge in the process.
But wait! You'll soon come to an area with a dark muddy ground. From here on go north first! You'll see two bridges, take the northeastern one and from there on keep running northeast. At the end of the small stripe of land you'll come to a forest shaped like a circle. Wander around a bit, then a Venus Djinni should appear! After the short battle's over you can count "Vine" to your allies.
Now run back to the place where you've chosen the path to the north. A bit further west you should be able to make out a further bridge. When you've passed it Kalay should already be in viewing distance! Enter the town.
Compared to the like what you've gotten to see in Golden Sun so far Kalay should be a real gem! No surprise there, as it's teh town of Ivan's master, the wealthy merchant Lord Hammet. Enjoy your stay as long as you're still here... Remember the bridge near Vault that had been destroyed? It's been rebuilt, as one of the townspeople will tell you. By the way, it's located in the direct north of Kalay, that way you can go back to Vale and the other old places. The other people do usually talk only about this and that, though.
Don't forget to have a proper shopping tour in such a rich city! The merchants seek your attention with many a great offering here. Who, by the way, have no problem with doing their business outside in the streets.

After the mandatory shopping you'll have the opportunity to acquire another Mars Djinni. First go to the northeast of the town. Then go atop the roof of the house here and jump from to niche in the wall to the mountain slope. Run to the statue and move it, enter the tunnel before you thereupon. Inside it you'll see a stone statue after only a few metres. Move it in front of the drain. The water will flow off, thus you can come to the djinni! "Scorch" will want to voluntarily join you. Leave the tunnel again and return to the town.
The last stop for you in Kalay will now be Hammet's palace. From the town square on just go north and upstairs. The palace guards will immediately stop you from entering as the Lord hasn't returned yet. Ivan, being the Lord's servant he is, will do the talking from then on. The guards notice that your knowledge about the current affairs around Hammet is somewhat lacking. They'd like to lead you to Lady Layana therefore. Isaac, Garet and Mia are welcome to join them as Ivan's friends.
Here the guards and Lady Layana will tell you that Lord Hammet has been taken hostage by the vicious ruler Dodonpa after his arrival. The ransom money for his release has already been sent, but it appears that he's still not an inch closer to his real release, though. They all come to the gruesome accordance that Dodonpa doesn't really intend to do such a thing at all... The guards subsequently suggest to go war against Lunpa, but Lady Layana as the diplomatically rather gifted person will quickly decline that option.
Lady Layana doesn't want to risk her husband's life by attacking Lunpa, although she's sure about his well-being, as he's a "good hostage" according to her. Furthermoe she doesn't want you to risk your life for Hammet's resue, especially Ivan's, because there's a prophecy connected with him...
She will now tell you about this prophecy. It's been foretold in it that after three years a Jupiter Adept will go on a journey with warriors from Vale. It was proclaimed when Ivan was still an infant and was handed over to Lord Hammet in a faraway village of adepts when the great merchant had to stop there during one of his dangerous travels. He received Ivan together with the Shaman's Rod there, along with a truly masterful advice on silk trade. One day Ivan will need the precious Shaman's Rod for exchange for another object once he's on his foretold journey. Hammet took Ivan to Vault along with him in search for hints about the prophecy. Lady Layana sincerely pleas to you to let the whole Hammet incident be for the time being, so you can focus on your actual quest without even further worries.
With this in mind leave the palace now. No worries, you'll eventually come to rescue Hammet – but for now there's really nothing you can do. When you've finished all of your business in Kalay, say farewell to the beautiful town for the time being! As there's still a lot to do. Leave Kalay and find yourselves on the World Map again.
